The Acworth Barn

Our beautiful barn in Acworth was completed in 2001, just as we moved to Acworth from North Salem, NY. It serves as Eno's workshop on the first floor, where miracles happen to restore vintage race cars to former glory, and the second floor space was designed to house the Kathy Schoemer Antiques Showroom.

The barn has had many incarnations, and now it is back to its original purpose - a glorious, airy, light-filled space to showcase Kathy's antiques inventory. From the first, the barn has had wonderful "karma" - a lovely, gentle space, conducive to peace and comfort. For the past several years, we have spent our winters there, and I had a spell there recovering from a horrible ankle break 5 years back. Every bit of time spent there has been pleasant and restorative.

The barn is conveniently located in the center of high Acworth, just a few yards from the 5 -point country crossroads which marks the very middle of the village. It is about 12 miles from Exit 7 on Route 91, the Springfield, VT - Charlestown, NH exit. It is the focus of many of my essays in the Notes Archive on this site, and has been the scene of many happy Christmases and other events since it was built.

This is a gorgeous property, consisting of 3 rolling acres of field, situated in the center of the beautiful town of Acworth, NH. There are 3 up-to-date, good-as-new buildings on the property.

  • The central red barn, 40 feet x 42 feet, described above, in great condition, with a workshop and garage on the first floor, with storage for six cars, and a glorious loft-type, cathedral- ceilinged living space above. There is a full bath and well-appointed, creative kitchen. The master bedroom is separate and there is a smaller bedroom/office also. The fireplace is magnificent: a soaring brick structure on the back wall of the loft room, with an 18th century mantel removed from a fine NH house. It has a standing seam roof with a lifetime guarantee. The heat is oil-fired hot water and the workshop has radiant floor heat. The windows are thermal paned casements, wood on the inside and metal on the exterior (never needing paint!).This barn was raised and completed in the spring of 2001.
  • The second building on the property is a 2-storey storage barn/garage, 24' x 24 ', designed for Kathy's antiques, equipped with excellent lighting, a painted concrete floor, with a staircase to the second level. This space is as yet unheated. It was built in 2009.
  • The third building , constructed in 2010, is an attractive barn-like open shed, designed for storage of 2 cars (or trucks or tractors), with lots of spare room for other stuff.

No amenity or cost was spared in the design and construction of the buildings. All three buildings are safe, secure, dry and beautiful.

All the construction is located on the top third of the property, leaving the beautiful field, rolling down toward the road, intact. Grazing animals would thrive here, and one of the outbuildings could be easily transformed into a barn for farm animals. It would be an excellent equestrian property for the home horse-enthusiast. There are many wonderful riding trails within riding distance and many other horse people in the neighborhood.

It is truly a dream property, designed to serve many facets of busy lifestyles, all in a delightful village with an easy rhythm, friendly people and reasonable expenses. We have thrived here and only the onset of old age forces us to part with it.
